I went running today, fully expecting a slow run. I need to not hurt myself before Saturday's long run and I'm also sore still from Tuesday's speed practice.
I set out fully expecting to do 13-minute miles.
Mile 1 was 11:17. Oops.
Mile 2 was 11:13. Double oops. Really, I thought I was slowing down.
Mile 3 was 11:57. Getting closer.
Mile 4 was 13:03. There we go!
Mile 5 was 14:04. I walked a bit more to soothe my heart rate.
Mile 6 was 13:54. Whatever. My hamstrings hurt.
Average pace was 12:34. I really had to slow it down in the end to get a more satisfactory average pace.
I went home and immediately soaked because my hamstrings locked up on me when I stopped.
Saturday is 21 miles. My group is starting earlier (meeting at 5:45am), and they're doing 14 miles, which means I have to start running at 4:30am, which does not make me happy. I want to do 6-7 before they get there and then run the last 14-15 with them (so that I have water, food and transportation if I hurt myself). I guess I'll be buying pepper spray tomorrow.
And it's supposed to be hot. Blech.
Cheers!

Nope
No running. Due to the thunderstorms and my non-desire to die by lightening, I decided to stay in my classrooms and catch up on my grading.
Plus side: I'm good to go with my exams and can start looking at the research papers.
Negative side: My miles this week will be TINY. As in 7-8 before my 21-miler.
Another plus: My legs are resting from yesterday's tough speed workout.
Another negative: I woke up with a sore throat. Throughout the day, it got lonely so the sneezes and a headache stopped by to keep it company.
Sigh. Does anyone else get sick right before the 21-miler? I seem to. For the third race in a row I've gotten sick in between 18 and 21 milers.
Sniff.

Speedwork
Today was the usual Tuesday torture/track session. Today's session involved...
1) Stretching
2) Walking lunges (blech)
3) Skipping
4) High legs (but I managed to convince them to do the can-can dance)
5) Running up and down the bleachers
6) Whips-and-chains (where we move in a line and the last one on the line has to run to catch up to the front of the line - I was quite speedy).
7) Speedwalking
My quads and ass will be sore tomorrow! Tomorrow evening, before rehearsal, I plan on doing an easy 6 miles and am going to try to pace myself to a steady 13-minute mile. I don't want to overexert myself, especially since I'm aiming for 20-21 miles on Saturday (and oh yes, there will be ice cream that afternoon).
And Saturday is also the day I'm supposed to find out about my whereabouts for the summer. Will I spend 5 weeks in DC? Or two in DC and two in NYC? They're supposed to tell us on April 1, but I don't know if they realize it's a Saturday. God, I hope they tell us Friday or Saturday instead of making us wait until Monday!

Two down... A Couple More to Go
Now that I've been informed I'm going to Nashville solo, I've been making travel plans.
Step One: Register for the race. Yes, I finally did it Saturday.
Step Two: Get a hotel. Check. Did that just now. That was not easy. Most of the close hotels were booked, leaving me with the airport hotels. I don't mind airport hotels and luckily there is a marathon shuttle to and fro one of the airport hotels and the start/finish, so I don't have to rent a car. I just have to figure out how to get to the expo. But I found a nice hotel and they utilize AAA discounts, so it's not bad priced at all (under the circumstances). No pool, but they have a tub and cable, so I'm a happy camper. I don't think they have a restaurant, which means I'll be hunting and foraging for my food. I am, however, less than a mile from the airport, so I'm sure there's food everywhere, and if all else fails, Domino's delivers. Originally I was going to stay one night (and fly back to Houston after the race), but I changed my mind. What's another night? At least this way I'm not going to be rushed and I can check a bag instead of having a carry-on. And I can bring back race souvenirs.
Step Three: Flight. I was going to drive, hopefully with someone else, but everyone (Erin, Andy, my mom) bailed on me and the idea of driving alone really doesn't bother me, but I'd have to leave Nashville right after the marathon in order to be back in town for tech rehearsal Sunday night. My overnight would be in Baton Rouge, and the drive from Nashville to Baton Rouge after the race would not be a fun one. I'd probably fall asleep at the wheel and cause a firey car crash. So, I'm going to get a flight. Happily, from my less-than-stellar flight through Southwest to New York last October (the one in which we had to land suddenly in Little Rock due to "the airflow valve for one of the two pressurization systems was stuck partially closed... the system was unable to supply a comfortable level of pressurized air into the cabin..."), I was the recipient for two "Tokens of Luv" totalling $100 on any Southwest flight. I found a good deal and will be able to get a flight for less than $200. I just have to buy my ticket at the counter, so guess who's going to the airport Sunday to get a ticket?
Step Four: Minor details. Tickets for the shuttle to and from the race. Figuring out how to get to and from the expo. Getting a ride to and from the airport (I think my mom's got this one). Saving money for the trip.
Plus, I'm going to Baton Rouge/New Orleans two weekends before that for the Crescent City Classic. Sigh. I'm traveling a lot again in one month. I'm not going anywhere in May.
But I'm going to enjoy the hell out of both places!
Cheers!

My Running Buddy Has Betrayed Me
I'm mad at my Garmin. I've cooled down, but at one time during my run I was literally cursing it. Loudly. I do believe the f-bomb was dropped a couple of times.
I decided this morning that I was going to prove to myself that I can have a great run. I did two new things with my Garmin this morning (one which I won't do again): I set up the virtual training partner and then I turned on the auto-pause (to be used - hopefully - only when stuck at a light or refilling my water bottles). I set the virtual training partner for 13:30 minute/miles (just to give me an ego boost to see myself ahead of the little guy) and off I went.
I set out to do 15 miles. I did a little more (but not according to the Garmin). When I got the Garmin, I knew going around Rice with it would be iffy because of the trees and thus a negative impact on the GPS system. But I've used it so much around Rice that I know where it cuts out and that it only does it for about 30 seconds or so, and then it catches up with me. Today, with the auto-pause in there, it got itself way out of whack. Case in point: when I got back into Rice (I did the majority of it not around Rice and planning on doing my last 6 miles in there), it said I had 6.5 miles to go. Wonderful - I came in on the long side and new that finishing that loop plus adding on two more would get me over 7.4, which would give me a nice cool-down after the last 6.5 miles. After doing what I knew would be 6.5 miles (since I knew Rice so well), it said that I still had 1.8 miles left to go - it kept turning itself off and I kept running and then it would auto-resume and stay at a distance for over 10 minutes and it was just a mess!!!! I turned it off when I knew I made 15 miles. And another way I know I'm right - I had my Garmin on my right wrist and my regular running watch on my left wrist. There was over 25 minutes difference between the two times when I stopped.
But here are my splits for the "13.3" miles (when it was really 15).
Mile 1 - 11:27 (now my fastest mile ever)
Mile 2 - 11:34
Mile 3 - 11:28
Mile 4 - 11:51
Mile 5 - 12:07
Mile 6 - 12:16
Mile 7 - 12:08
Mile 8 - 12:24
Mile 9 - 12:30 (average)
Mile 10 - 12:30 (average) (mile 9 and 10 was where the GPS started acting up. Lap 9 was 1.6 miles and lap 10 was .4 miles, so I averaged the total time for those two miles)
Mile 11 - 13:41 (GPS acting up - I know it was closer to 13)
Mile 12 - 13:0 (this is right)
Mile 13 - 17:19 (GPS acting up - I know this isn't right at all)
Mile .2 - 3:43 (I walked - I was so frustrated by this point).
Average running pace: 12:43, but I know it was more like 12:15 or so. Even with the problems, I had some great time and I set unofficial PRs in 5k, 10k and half-marathon.
Here's where I stopped the Garmin, but as I said, I know I went an extra 1.8 miles.
I know I did positive splits and instead of getting faster, I was slowly getting slower. I'm ok with this because I knew I was pushing myself hard in the beginning and I wanted to and I was going to slow down on purpose so as to not hurt myself in the long run. Towards the end, I did start hurting, but I was not psychologically in the mood anymore because I was so frustrated with my Garmin. ARGHHH!!!!
Oh well. I had a great run and now I'm going to soak in a cold tub for 10 minutes and then stand in a warm shower.
Cheers!

Typo
Typo in yesterday's posting: I need to lose a total of 24 now, now 24 more (on top of the 30).
I'm off to run now.

Wow (and not a good one)
I haven't run on a Saturday in a long time (except for the Sunday half-marathons I ran this year). Today, I just did not want to do my long run. So I didn't. I blame the cooler temperatures. Instead, I went home (because yes, I decided I didn't want to run after I parked by car at Memorial Park), graded tests, went to the gym to use the elliptical machine and lift weights, and then got my hair cut.
Tomorrow I'll do my 15 miles. I just didn't feel like it today. I'm hurting, I'm not happy with my running and I feel like lead. I've been having some great runs (like Wednesday's 12:20 average pace and two more runs with that kind of time), but then the next day I'm a full minute slower. I'm in a running rut I think. I am also terrified, I realized. I know I can do 12 minute, 12:20 minute miles and feel fine, but I'm afraid of getting too tired and overall doing miserably. I want so badly to finish my next race in around 6 hours, because I feel like a slug with the times I presently hold.
Someone once told me that he was afraid I would one day start to hate running. I don't think I hate running, but I've realized I'm beginning to detest the runs longer than 13 miles. Ever since I started running, I've been training for a race. I have never run just to run; it's always been in preparation. I wanted to put off my marathon training until I lost 30 pounds (now 24 more), but I missed the thrill of training and the race (and began to fear I'd lose whatever long-distance ability I had), so I signed up for the Country Music Marathon anyway. Now, however, I am beginning to regret my decision. I'm going to finish the marathon, however, because I know I'll feel wonderful/proud after I finish (plus I've been training harder for this marathon than I have the other two marathons I've run). After I finish, I'm going to hang up the full marathons until I actually lose the rest of the pounds I want to. Don't get me wrong: I'll still run, but I'll focus more on total weekly mileage than my long run. And by running shorter distances daily, I hope to increase my speed since I don't have to worry about not injuring myself before a long run. I'll keep my longest run to 10-12 miles.
What does this mean for the fall season? I don't know yet. I've decided to NOT put my name in for New York this year. If I did, I'd feel pressured and I'm not ready for that right now (besides, I'd rather run NY when I'm more confident). As for MCM, I don't know if I'll do that one either. I'm going to put my name in the lottery, but ask me again in June if I'm going to do it. Hell, the only reason I'm considering doing it is because Andy's doing it and it might be fun to run the same marathon (although he'll finish it MUCH faster than me, and I'm ok with that - he's a runner, I'm a jogger). I'll probably to the Nike Women's half, the Dallas half, the Baton Rouge half, etc., but I need to focus on the small things again before focusing on the big things. Right now, my small things are getting lighter and faster (not incredibly fast, but I want to get down to 10:30-11 minute miles comfortably).
I want to get out of this rut. I think the best thing for me is to stop running marathons for a while, until I feel better about my running. Luckily, my race is only 5-6 weeks away.
I'd say "Cheers", but I'm not in a very cheerful mood (as you could probably sense).
Sigh.

A Night of Cape Cods... Without the Vodka
Here's a bit of information about what will happen during my show every night it runs. I'll be getting my daily dose of vitamin C nightly. You see, I have to drink a LOT of wine in Act I. I was told today that the wine will be Cranberry Juice. This also means that, in addition to my vitamin increase, I'll be spending all of Act II (when I'm not onstage) in the bathroom.
M&Ms update: they're still there on my bedside. I did not break into them. They remain there, taunting me, laughing at me, tempting me. I will be strong!
Today's run: 3 miles. The temp kept dropping and the wind picked up and I was not dressed for a cold run. I couldn't get warm, my hands were frozen and I was unhappy so I quit after 3 miles. Yesterday's run was so satisfying that I'm ok with today's less-than-stellar workout. But I still ran, isn't that good?
Time for bed!!

The Evil That Lurks
Unlike Cassie's and Vic's chocolate-peanut butter Reeses/Easter candies... the evil that lurks in my bedroom is a small bag of peanut M&Ms leftover from Saturday's run (I discovered that M&Ms at mile 16-18 makes me happy). I didn't eat them on Saturday, so they're still here... possibly waiting for Saturday, possibly waiting for my 21-miler. Right now they are on my bedside, taunting me.
I haven't had chocolate since Saturday evening and earlier today I thought that I didn't miss it. Now, I'm having second thoughts. I'm having a weak moment.
*Sigh* I should just go to bed without eating them (key word: sigh). I get one free meal a week on the abs diet and I don't want my free meal to be chocolate at 10:27pm. I would rather have a hamburger at Beck's Prime at the HRB meeting on Sunday.
Mmm. Chocolate. Peanuts. Crunchy shell. Bright colors.
*Sigh*
Must be strong. Must be strong.
Goodnight!

What a Great Day
I had a great day overall, and I thought I'd share it.
First of all, my alarm went off at 4:30am. Although I've been running, I haven't been to the gym to lift weights in almost 3 weeks (I blame the Rodeo and late nights). Since I didn't have rehearsal last night, I thought I'd go today.
After my alarm went off, I stood on the side of my bed for (I kid you not) 6 minutes, contemplating actually going to the gym or going back to sleep in my warm feather heaven. I decided to go on, since I was already up. At the gym, I went on the elliptical machine for 35 minutes (and updated myself with the latest celebrity gossip magazines) and then hit the circuit machines for 40 minutes.
Work was pretty good. I have one class period that's tougher than others (it has the highest number of low achievers and delinquents in there) and it went pretty smoothly - my blood pressure stayed normal. :)
After work, I went for a 6 mile run. I walked outside and lo and behold - it was a perfect 55 degree afternoon. Rice, here I come!
Here's the stats:
Distance: 6 miles
Pain: none
Hydration: pretty good
Intervals: ran a mile, walked 40 seconds. (endurance run)
Andy showed my how to find the laps, so here we go!
Mile 1- 12:13 (no walk break)
Mile 2- 12:24 (with walk break)
Mile 3- 12:27
Mile 4- 12:37
Mile 5- 12:07
Mile 6- 12:23
Average time: 12:20!!!!!!! Yes, it was a great run. The last endurance run I had averaged 13:07 minute miles.
Now it's almost time for rehearsal and I'm drinking a very yummy homemade smoothie, which is becoming my favorite post-run, pre-rehearsal dinner. Mmm.....
Cheers!

After work, I went for a 6 mile run. I walked outside and lo and behold - it was a perfect 55 degree afternoon. Rice, here I come!
Here's the stats:
Distance: 6 miles
Pain: none
Hydration: pretty good
Intervals: ran a mile, walked 40 seconds. (endurance run)
Andy showed my how to find the laps, so here we go!
Mile 1- 12:13 (no walk break)
Mile 2- 12:24 (with walk break)
Mile 3- 12:27
Mile 4- 12:37
Mile 5- 12:07
Mile 6- 12:23
Average time: 12:20!!!!!!! Yes, it was a great run. The last endurance run I had averaged 13:07 minute miles.
Now it's almost time for rehearsal and I'm drinking a very yummy homemade smoothie, which is becoming my favorite post-run, pre-rehearsal dinner. Mmm.....
Cheers!

Drama Queen
Today's run: 3 miles. It was warm and my Garmin was dead (I guess I forgot to turn it off Saturday), so my running was a little less than enthused. Overall time was 39 minutes, so it wasn't too off. I felt like I was going slower, though, so I guess I'm getting more comfortable and should slightly increase my pace. I'm going to work on pacing myself better. I missed my Garmin today. It's charging right now so that I can have it for tomorrow's speed practice.
I've been sore since Saturday's run, with pained feet mostly and a slight random twinge in my knees and quads. After today's run, however, my right quad started tightening up. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and find a good sports massage therapist to work out the knot.
We started rehearsals yesterday for "How the Other Half Loves." This is going to be a great show. It's fast-paced, very witty and my character is a drama queen on-stage; I constantly fight and yell at my "husband" (Lonnie), get into two fistfights, constantly throw things, and basically be a spoiled brat. It's great!
Now my spare time is really gone. Any social life that I had (because let's face it, it was a tiny social life because I'm boring and don't go out much) is not going to happen until after the show opens. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday I have rehearsals. Tuesday I have speed practice. I don't go out on Friday nights because of early morning runs on Saturday. I could go out Saturdays, but with my long runs I'm often tired and pained and just want to stay at home and be a bum. Sundays are out because I get up early on Mondays to go to the gym.
But I'm ok with that. I'm back on stage!!!!!!!
Cheers!

Running, a Pig and Dead Bodies
None of those things have anything in common.
First of all, I ended up not doing the Lookin' Good 10k. Andy was in town, so we ran a bit together in the morning (running with him was good so that I could pace myself better) and then I left him and ran another 14 miles on my own/with TNT, bringing my daily total to 18 miles.
It was a tough 18 miles. I started slowly (so as not to overexert myself), but just couldn't pick up the pace. Overall, I ran it a 90 seconds per mile slower. I think I overdid it on Tuesday's speed day combined with the 6 miles I already ran that day. There were a number of things I did wrong, though: my right quad started hurting early on, I didn't get a lot of sleep the night before plus I didn't eat breakfast. Although it wasn't the best run, I finished it and overall I feel my running/training for Nashville is better than what I did for San Diego (and WAY better than Marine Corps). I don't feel terrible today, either, so things could've been worse - no leg pain and only a bit of feet soreness. I'm taking the day off from running, although I might head to the gym to lift some weights or do some Pilates in a bit.
After the run, Andy and I went to the Rodeo. It's always fun to introduce people to the Rodeo, and this was great fun because not only was it his first time to the Rodeo, but also being around livestock and he's not a Texan (therefore he was immersed in deep Texas culture all afternoon). I'm sure he thinks we Texans are insane, but he said he had a good time nonetheless. The Rodeo itself was great because it was the finals; all of the winners were announced.
After the Rodeo, we went to the Museum of Natural History for the Bodies 3 exhibit. I have mixed emotions on that one. First of all, although I wasn't as disturbed and creeped out as I thought I would be, some of it was difficult to look at. Other parts of it were fascinating and I kept staring as though trying to figure out how this guy was able to display corpses the way he did. Let me back up...
For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, this German doctor created a chemical that slows down the decaying process, making the organs and tissues and muscles look like plastic. 120 people donated their bodies (after natural death, of course) to this man and he managed to preserve their organs, nerves, muscles, etc. Then he takes the bodies on tour and uses them to educate people on the human anatomy. Only about 8-10 of the bodies were whole; the rest were cut up/disected and put in display cases. Some of it was fascinating, like seeing the nervous system and circulatory system, comparing healthy livers/hearts/lungs with those of smokers and cancer patients, looking at the red vein/arterial system. Some displays were depressing, like the fetuses. Some were creepy, like the man (skinned) holding his own skin in his hands. I was intrigued by the exhibit, but personally wasn't deeply moved by it. I would definitely recommend it to high school science teachers as a possible field trip. Would I see it again? I don't know. If any of you go, the best was the red ateries and the nervous system. You'll see what I mean.
Overall, it was a great day. I was utterly exhausted by the time I went to bed, but it was the best day of my spring break.
Bummer. School starts again tomorrow. I still have to make up a quiz.
Rehearsals start tonight! Yea!
Oh, and in my never-failing quest to find an eating plan that fits with my eating habits, schedule, and workout activity, I'm trying a new one. While I lost 6 pounds (and did not gain them back) this year on the South Beach Diet, I realized it's not the best for me. Andy is doing the Abs diet and, after 3 weeks, has lost 16 pounds and looks great. I think I'll try that one for a couple of weeks and see how it goes... But between school, my marathon training, regular gym visits and rehearsals, I'm going to have to be careful, particular, and pay special attention to my eating (especially with the marathon coming up).
Cheers!

Reviews... and a Ghost
I think my bedroom is haunted.
I have a ceiling fan that contains four lightbulbs. For the past month, I've only had three bulbs (because the 4th one blew out and I've been too lazy to change it). I've been home most of the day and my light has been on in my room all day. I just walked back in here, and the 4th light is indeed lit. I know I didn't change that bulb and it's been dead for a month. Hmmmm...
Ok, time for reviews.
Review number 1: a book. "The Dead Secret" by Wilkie Collins. This is a Victorian thriller (actually written in Victorian England). The author was a good friend of Dickens, but I have to admit freely that his writing style is so much better. I've read many of Dickins' books, but to be honest - I can't remember the stories. This one had a good story line with a very interesting narrative style. The author writes (almost talks) to the audience, instead of at them. The descriptions and antecdotes of characters bring the characters to life and the imagery that is created is done so very eloquently. I was not bored! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a variety of literature, but not to someone who enjoys only modern novels.
Review number 2: a movie. I saw "The Libertine" yesterday. I'm hesitant to call it good, but I would be remiss if I called it bad. Let's just call it "interesting." This is NOT a movie for children, NOT a movie to see with your mom and NOT a movie to see on a first date with a random person. Johnny Depp's character is very similar to that of Geoffrey Rush's Marquis de Sade in "Quills", only less violent. The movie is all about sex in Restoration England. Some of the scenes are shocking, but it fits with the theme and Depp's character. And if anyone out there has wild, unprotected sex - this movie will make you rethink future decisions along those lines. Depp's character suffers from syphillis at the end, and let's just say the make-up was very convincing.
Now I'm reading "The Woman in White" - yes, the book based on the Broadway musical whose cast recording has yet to leave my CD player. No movies for me this weekend, I think, but Andy is coming into town and tomorrow (after a run), we're going to see the body exhibit at the museum. I'll give my review about that one probably on Sunday.

What Did I Tell You?
For most of yesterday, my right quad was KILLING ME. Then, it suddenly worked itself out. By the time I went to the Rodeo last night, I was fine. My left achilles tendon was still smarting a bit, so I'm not going to run this morning. I might go 3 miles this afternoon, instead of the 7 I was thinking about doing. It's not bother me now, but it doesn't mean that the pain isn't there lying dormant.
I did get my car back yesterday, in exchange for $302. I was told that there was water damage in the wiring behind a license plate (the back one, I guess) and it caused a spark/small/tiny fire and destroyed some of the wires. Makes sense, except I haven't driven it through high water since last July (that freak thunderstorm that brought even freakier unexpected flooding in which I was stuck in Chuy's on Westheimer, at first the parking lot until I decided I wanted fajitas, for two hours because it was high and dry and Westheimer was a MESS). I cannot wait until my car is paid off (in a year and a half). Then I can afford any random repairs without depleting my savings account. Grrr.... On the plus side, they washed my car for me. Too bad it's going to rain today.
Oh, and it seems that I'm doing the Nike women's half. Christine talked me into it (she's doing the full again, but promises to actually train and put in a run longer than 6.2 miles before the race itself). Since there's a chance I'm doing Marine Corps the weekend after, I'm going to use it as a training run and pace myself slowly. Why hurt myself the weekend before my full? I'm only doing it for the Tiffany's necklace. Plus I'll be done and can cheer her on as she runs through the finish.
"Sing, for it's Lamastide!" Sorry, another Broadway moment.
Yesterday, after my run, I changed into my pjs and stayed on the couch until 4pm. No, I wasn't sick. I did it because I'm on Spring Break and haven't spent the day in my pjs in a long time. I read on the couch for HOURS. I'm almost done with my book (the mystery has been solved, and it now in its concluding 30 pages). I'll finish it today and then start on another new book I bought.
It's a shame that I have to continue to read new books. I have a perfectly acceptable copy of "War and Peace" that I've been wanting to continue, but SOMEBODY has been slacking on his initial reading and I can't re-start until he gets to where I am(perhaps he's afraid that I would've finished it on my Spring Break, but conveniently he can read it on his???).
Today, I'm going to take clothes to the cleaners and vacuum my car. Exciting stuff. Maybe I'll go to the movies again. "Libertine" looks interesting.
Cheers!

Ides... continued
I had another wonderful run!
I woke up this morning and didn't feel much pain (suprisingly). None in my left calf, only slight in my right quadricep. After dropping my car at the shop (yes, it had to go AGAIN - it shorted again, thus losing back lights and dash lights again), I went to Rice. Actually, I stopped at Starbucks and read a bit because it was a bit chilly outside. As I read, I kneaded my right quad, hoping to loosen it up.
My run was nice. The weather was beautiful again and I averaged a 12:51 pace throughout the 6 miles (2+ loops around Rice), which makes me happy. I felt tightness in my left achilles heel towards the end, but not bad enough to stop and stretch. All in all, despite the hard workout yesterday, I felt damn good! One thing that suprised me is that I realized I tended to go faster when I was getting tired. I think I was overcompensating, thinking I had to go faster to go normal. But I felt wonderful.
Until I got home.
After my run, I walked .2 to cool down and then went home. Upon getting out of the car I'm driving today, I immediately felt the pain in my right quad - it's like there's a tennis ball inside my leg. And as I sit here, my left achilles heel is tightening up.
Luckily, today is clean-up/laundry day, so I'm going to stay home and probably ice my achilles tendon and quad, trying to get them back to normal. They're not an injury pain, more of an overusage pain. I'll be fine by tomorrow.
If worse comes to worse, I won't run again until Saturday's 18-miler. But I know me. I just need to rest.
Cheers!

Let Me Gaze Into My Crystal Ball
I see pain. Much pain. There will be soreness in the left quad... soreness in the glutes. I see a possible tightness in the left calf... wait... what is this beyond the mist and fog? More pain.
I did two runs today. Let me talk about them separately...
Run #1 - 6 miles.
This was what I call and "endurance run" - I ran a mile, walked a minute. The purpose was to gain strength and, duh, endurance. Generally, they're slow runs. But today was wonderful (weather-wise) and I had a great run, averaging 13:06 mile. I ran straight to Jamba Juice afterwards for a cool-down smoothie and easily could've done another loop around Rice, but decided not to.
(In between run #1 and run #2, I worked on school stuff, went to the movies and saw "Failure to Launch," which was hysterical, read some more of a captivating novel I'm reading and then wandered around Barnes and Noble for a while.)
Run #2 - 3.22 miles (yes, I ran 9.22 miles today!!)
This is where the pain comes in. This run was a Team In Training Tuesday night speed run. We get there and I run three laps around the track to warm up. No problem. Then the pain comes in. We do walking lunges, bunny hops, high kicks, stretching, etc. I know from experience that the lunges will be the cause of some pain. After the exercises, we started to do a fartlek-type training. We walked 1 minute, ran fast 30 seconds, walked another minute, ran fast 60 seconds, walked another minute, ran 90 seconds, walked another minute, ran 120 seconds, and then we'd start all over. We did that for about 26 minutes. I ran my ass off. Even with the many minutes of walking a mile, I averaged below 12 minute miles. Some legs were 9 minute miles (usually the 30 second legs). My lungs still hurt. My right quad is sore and something felt like it snapped in my left calf, so there might be a bit of pain tomorrow.
We shall see. For now, it's time for dinner and then the bed!
Cheers!

Thanks, Jon
Thanks to Jon, the little 10K time has been cleared. Jon (being his usual proactive self) sent an e-mail to the Lookin' Goood 10k on my behalf asking about the insane time limit on the 10k. They replied today, saying it was a typo on the instructions; the 5k actually has the 60 minute time limit, the 10k has no time limit.
Thanks Jon!
Thanks Jon!
Yea!!!!!!!
Today is the first official day of Spring Break. I spent it grading tests and updating my grade book. Tonight, I will write tests and quizzes.
But at least most of my schoolwork will be out of the way.
Weather: hot. Slightly cooler now than this morning, but I'm still not going to run. I'm sore and will rest one day. I might do some Tae-bo later tonight as a cross-training exercise.
I got home today, after spending an ungodly amount of time at Starbucks, to find a letter in my mailbox from the Texas Education testing people... my test score came in. The scores ranged from 100-300, and a 240 is the passing minimum. I got a.... 278!!! Yes, I passed with a very good score. I am very pleased and I don't have to take the motherf*****g thing again!
Cheers!

One More Step...
3 miles. I ran 3 miles and it was a rough 3 miles. It was hot, and I was still a bit dehydrated from yesterday. Yet I am happy with the 3 miles. Total weekly mileage: 22.5. I hope to increase that this upcoming week.
I was also happy to read the temperatures for this upcoming week. Highs back in the 70s, lows in the 50s. I'll be running in the mornings to catch the lower temperatures. I love Spring Break!!
Cheers!

Curses!
I went to Luke's Locker to sign up for the Lookin' Good 10k. I paid my fee, got my t-shirt and packet and left.
At a red light, I was reading the race instructions.
There is a time limit on the 10k! And the time limit is 60 minutes!!! If I pushed myself, I could probably do it in 70 minutes, but I'm not willing to go that fast and it's still past the time limit.
So, I have two choices. I can either switch to the 5k, or not do the run and run with TNT instead. Considering I already have the t-shirt, I'm thinking about swallowing my pride and running the 5k.
As Andy might say, "I feel like a bitch."

Here Comes the Sun...
Today, I ran another 10k, parking my car at Memorial Park. It was not as good as the last one.
First off, as you may have read, I haven't done that much running this week (in fact, Andy has beat me in mileage this week). Today's run was either going to be great (fresh legs) or tiresome (stiff legs). It was tiresome. Oh, and not only have I not run, but I haven't even been to the gym AND I ate Chinese food last night (entertaining a friend who was housebound due to a sugery).
I started off really slow again, because I wanted to save my legs for the race. My legs felt like concrete. I trudged along down Memorial and Allen Parkway to the race start. At the start, ran into Rusty-the-Super-Walker (an ex-TNT speedwalker who can clear a marathon in under 5. He did the Rodeo Run in one hour 2 seconds). I also ran into some other TNT coaches and mentors from my past.
What I love about the Bayou City Classic are the costumes and centipedes. Here are some of the centipedes that made me laugh: there was a Dick Cheney look-alike (due to a mask) wearing cammo and carrying a shotgun. Running in front of him were runners dressed like ducks and hunting dogs, led by another guy also dressed in cammo, but with fake blood on the side of his face. Running behind Cheney were runners dressed in black with "security" written on their shirts. Besides the Cheney centipedes, there were the "Running Noses" - about 6 runners wearing huge rubber noses leading a guy wearing a huge box of Kleenex. Oh, and there were about 8-9 runners dressed like penguins, but the costumes were hot and they lost two penguins in the race. The final centipede of note was the guy dressed like a nun leading 6 "Catholic schoolgirls." Some of the girls were guys in drag.
There were more costumes, but those were the funniest. If anyone is utterly confused, let me know.
I don't have a mile-by-mile breakdown because, frankly, I was unhappy while running and didn't pay that much attention to anything but my feet and the sweat running down my face. My fastest mile was mile 1 (12 minutes) and each mile was successively slower, culminating in a 14 mile in the end. I was miserable. My time was 1:21:49, so no PR, but I didn't expect to.
During the race, I saw Sarah playing photographer and then hooked up with Cassie, Edwin, Jessica and Holden at the end. I ate a huge cookie, a breakfast taco and some water, waited almost an hour and then trudged back to my car.
Dear Lord, was the heat unbearable (to me) by the end. The last leg home was miserable. I met up with a girl towards my last couple of miles and we were both miserable, so we adjusted our paces and times and ran to the park together. Misery loves company! But she was doing 20 miles, whereas I was planning on stopping at 15. She was a faster runner, so I ran a bit harder to keep up with her which was good for me since I was not using my full potential by that time.
With about 1 mile to my car, I told her to continue, because I had to walk. I was too hot and getting slightly dizzy.
I am home now, having guzzled plenty of water. I'm going to shower and then I'm thinking I want a nap. Today is the first day of my spring break, and I plan on taking lots of naps. I'll need them, since I'll be upping my mileage just a tad this week.
36 days until the Crescent City Classic.
Cheers!

Llamas and a Rock Band
I went to the Rodeo tonight, with my friend Chad (ex-TNT runner/mentee/LSU grad), to see the Maroon 5 concert. Here are the highlights of the evening...
1) The petting zoo. Chad hadn't been to the Rodeo in ages, so we went to the Livestock Show first because I told him of the kangaroos in the petting zoo. We went in, and he was quite popular with the animals - he had a llama in his face most of the time. He's a very tall guy, so the llama easily stuck his face in Chad's and did. Also, there was a deer who kept following Chad and trying to eat his shirt. I, on the other hand, played with the baby goats and the miniature donkeys. But the animals tonight were fiesty - they were goosing people, nibbling on purse straps and shirts.
2) The concert. Honestly, we missed the Rodeo because of the petting zoo, but we did make it to the concert.
Here's my lowdown on the concert...
I like Maroon 5, I really do. I saw them last year and Adam Levine (lead singer) told the audience they were working on a new/second album. When Andy and I went to Best Buy the last time I was in Baton Rouge, I bought their new album, which turned out to be a live version of their first album. Tonight's concert was that album - in the same order! I predicted the order of the songs quite correctly. Adam did, however, tell the audience that they were working on a third album and they actually played a new song from it. Let's hope it's full of new songs.
Adam Levine had us laughing. He was very proud of his second HLSR (that's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo) belt buckle - the really huge one. And then he looked up from the rotating stage and saw the screen that was typing up every word he said. He then began playing with the screen - talking slowly, cursing (to see if they'd print it), etc. Then he said he was going to play a game with the screen. He said, "Ok, Mr. Screen, spell otomatopeia." The screen paused for a long time and then typed it, but mispelled it. The crowd laughed as Adam said, "Adam, 1. Screen, zero." And then he'd sing again, but ocassionally go back to the screen. The bass player was extremely hyper (natural or enhanced, I don't know) and he actually ran off of the rotating screen and ran around the stadium. How he had the energy to run around the stadium (think football field) and then get back on stage alludes me.
But overall it was a good concert. I knew the words to most of the songs and sang enthusiastically along.
Next Rodeo day: Sunday. The advantage to being a committee member/badge holder is that you get in free with a friend. So I'm taking another friend who hasn't been in a long time on Sunday. Next week, I might go Wednesday, depending on my rehearsal schedule.
Bed time.
Cheers!

"I Believe My Heart"
I am listening to a new CD - the cast recording to "Woman in White." It's WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pardon my Broadway/West End moment.
So, no running yesterday nor today nor tomorrow. And I'm ok with it. I'm still a bit sore from Tuesday's track practice, plus I've been going to the rodeo.
But Saturday... hoping for another 17.30 miles, if not a whole 18.
It's almost time for Spring Break!!! Today I went on a field trip, and it's fun to be known as the "cool" teacher. I had a good time, but the best was when I got back to school - a brand-new computer was awaiting me in my room! The bad thing was the fact that they hooked up the computer on the opposite side as my desk, so I had my students help me completely rearrange my room. Tomorrow I'm going to figure out how to make my computer acknowledge my printer.
Oh, and tomorrow is early dismissal. Many students aren't even coming. Tomorrow should be an easy day.
And then 9 days of scholastic freedom!!!

New Shoes! New Shoes!
I got new running shoes today! Woo-hoo! Mine are almost 4 months old and have too many miles on them. But I almost had a scare.
I decided to use Runsport for my purchase since I had a 20% discount coupon. I had a feeling they'd have to order my shoes (since I have big feet). Yep, they had to call it in. But then, 15 minutes later, they call my cell and tell me that Aasics doesn't have any in my size in the warehouse and they don't know when they'll get more in. WHAT???!!! And they called Fleet Feet in the Village for me, and the biggest size they had was an 11 (I wear an 11.5 - my shoes are 10s normally).
Crap. This does not make me happy. I like my kind, and I don't want to have to find another one. Sigh. I'll head over to Luke's Locker, just in case. They're the ones who sold me my others so maybe they'd have one last pair. And if I'd have to get another style, I trusted them.
I go to Luke's Locker, and not only do they have my kind in my size, but Aasics updated them and they're actually cool looking! I bought them promptly, and went happily to track practice.
I get to track practice and discover that they're repainting the track. Damn. We have to run in the field and I'm sure as hell not doing it in my new, clean shoes. So I don my old shoes for the run tonight.
I want to wear my new shoes and break them in soon, but I see only dirt paths of Memorial and Rice in my future. Sigh. I guess the dirt is inevitable.
But they're so shiny and they smell nice.
Cheers!
Erica

Trudgin' Along
Damn, it was warm this afternoon.
I walked out of my classroom this afternoon and realized that my run was going to suck. I am a fair weather runner and this was NOT fair weather.
I planned on 6, but after 1.5, I decided to just finish out the first lap (3 miles). It was a slow process, due to the heat, due to the fact that I'm still a bit tight from Saturday, due to my general unenthusiasm. I also came to a realization.
I'm going to have to start running mornings again. Blech. Don't get me wrong - I actually prefer to run in the mornings, but it's still a tad dark for my taste (although I had a great run in the dark Saturday morning). I'm going to try to hold out as long as I can, but it might be really soon.
Stats:
Miles: 3 (barely)
Heat: too high for me - over 80 degrees and humid.
Hydration: Eh. It was ok.
Nutrition: Yesterday sucked (Rodeo!), but today was good.
People I knew: 1 (a co-teacher)
Cop cars: 5. 4 were at the Metrorail. Did yet another pedestrian get hit?
Tomorrow: Who knows. I might try to get 6 in before work (if I feel awake enough), but tomorrow evening is speed/track work, so I'll be running regardless.
Thank goodness for biofreeze!!
Cheers!
PS - I bought a new CD and have to talk about it. It's the cast recording to Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Woman in White", which closed prematurely after only 4 months due to the lead actress having breast cancer and the lead actor having a viral infection. Anyways, it's wonderful!! I'm planning a trip to London for school, and hopefully it'll still be on the West End.

8 Miles... No, Let's Do 5
Ugh. Today wasn't a good run, but it was a run. That's all that matters, right?
Oh, and I forgot to mention about yesterday's run... I had my ass kicked for about 3 minutes. One of my mentees, who is extremely fast, caught up to me (he had to catch up to me since I started before most of them did) and started to run alongside of me. I felt horribly guilty, because he's so much faster than I. I didn't ask him to run alongside of me, so I shouldn't've felt obligated to, but I began to run faster to get closer to his pace. Soon, I was going a 10 minute mile pace, which is just beyond me. After about 3 minutes, I waved him on because I could barely catch my breath. It took me a bit of time to recover from that 3 minutes.
Yesterday, after the run, my right hamstring was tighter than normal. I used a massager on it, but when I awoke it was still a bit tight.
This morning, I felt not bad, so I was determined to put in 8 miles. Yeah, after 5 I realized I was jogging less and shuffling more. I gave up and then walked the 1.3 miles back to my car (aborting my intended route). My average pace was 13:42, slowing down at the end.
This week, who knows what is in store. I'm staying after school only once this week (for test make-ups), so I hope to get a bit of a run in the remainder of the days.
Gotta go and soak now. My hamstring got tighter during this run. I'm going to sit in a warm tub with the latest issue of Runner's World. Then, it's Rodeo time!
Cheers!

I Am a Rock Star
I had the best long run I've ever had!!!!
Why, might you ask? Because not only did I keep a steady pace throughout, but I kept a pace of 12:32. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am finally getting faster (or allowing myself to be faster, more like it). If this was a half marathon, I would've PRed by 10 minutes!!!
Stats:
Miles: 14
Average pace: 12.32
Number of miles above 13m/m: 1 - my last, because I was tired and ready to cool down.
Number of miles sub 12m/m: 3!!! I ran my second fastest mile ever at mile 12, and my third at mile 12.
I felt great. I'm a bit sore now, but no more than usual. I felt wonderful and every time I heard my Garmin beep and seeing that I ran a sub 12:30 mile make me happy! I was cheering myself on as I ran (a funny sight, I'm sure).
Total miles this week thus far: 20.
Total miles in the mile competition with Andy: 98.10. I'm ahead of him... for now. He might catch up during the summer (since I hate running in the heat), so I have to get as many miles in now as I can.
Oh, and I did a bit of hill work.
Time for a shower!
Cheers!

Why I Enjoy Running
I had a so-so day. Today was the last day of Stanford 10 testing, thank God. That has got to be the most boring test to administer - and for three straight days! We couldn't seem to get the times right, we were behind, class schedules were odd, I didn't know how to plan, lunch was almost at 2 and I was starving...
I did, however, discover that many teachers and I are chaperoning a field trip on Thursday, which will be fun. Plus, I didn't have my least favorite period today.
I ran today!!! I was not looking forward to it, but I had to run off all the pizza I had for lunch today.
Stats:
Miles: 6
Weather: Sucked. It was hot. I was not happy. I almost gave up after 3 miles.
Time: average 13:30 pace.
Type: Endurance run. Run a mile, walk 45 seconds.
People I knew: 1 (Faith, my co-mentor)
Times Faith passed me up: 3. She's speedy.
Oddest site: A man running, pushing a baby stroller. There was no baby on board, only a basketball. I hope there's not a baby in a basket somewhere.
Hydration: Pretty good, actually.
Nutrition: Notice I said I ate a lot of pizza at lunch. Enough said.
I also went to the gym this morning: 50 minutes on the elliptical machine and 20 minutes of lower body weights.
This weekend I hope to get 16-17 miles done. Only going 6 miles thus far doesn't make me happy. I might get 3-6 done tomorrow. Christine's coming into town and we have so much to talk about. I'm trying to convince her to jog and do it at the same time so that we can gossip and burn calories and I can get some miles in.
Next week, I don't have a lot after school, except two rodeo days. Wednesday is Toby Keith (with Carissa) and Thursday is Maroon 5 (with my friend Chad, I think). Hopefully I can run run run next week. And then the next week is Spring Break! I'm going to be a running fool! I can run in the morning again!!!
Ok, time to relax and go to bed.
Cheers!

Hopefully I can run run run next week. And then the next week is Spring Break! I'm going to be a running fool! I can run in the morning again!!!
Ok, time to relax and go to bed.
Cheers!

Your Eyes Aren't Deceiving You
I have not run this week. Not at all.
Here are my excuses (because, let's face it, they are excuses).
Sunday: I was still sore from Saturday.
Monday: Gym in the AM, but the afternoon was busy with rehearsals for the Black History program. Didn't get out until almost 7. Darkness had fallen and I don't run in the dark.
Tuesday/yesterday: Rodeo time! Now, I probably could've squeezed in a quick run, but my trip to the Rodeo/George Strait concert was a quasi-date and I wouldn't've had time to shower. But I did go to the gym in the morning. Oh, and before some of you get excited, while I did have a nice time at the Rodeo, I don't know if I'll go out with him again.
Today: I was tired, my day sucked and I was working on little sleep. In fact, when I'm done typing this, I am going to gather up my gym bag for tomorrow and go to bed. Yes, I plan on being in bed by 7pm.
I'm such an anti-social loser. Sigh. And I haven't run. Double sigh.
Today was bad.
